Why do some garages discount the fee? MOT bays and equipment are expensive to install and run so the money will need to be made up somewhere, usually on unnecessary repairs. Our testers will attempt to pass as many vehicles as possible. We are not on commission so we will not recommend unnecessary repairs.

The most common reasons for failure according to the DVSA statistics are brakes, lighting and signalling, suspension, tyres, damaged bodywork, fuel leaks, emissions.

Here are some things you can do to improve your vehicle’s chance of passing its MOT.

  • Check that all the lights are working including number plate lamps.
  • Check wiper blades for damage. Check the washers work and the blades clean the screen properly.
  • Check the seat belts are not frayed and they clip into their catch correctly.
  • Check if the car’s wheels have any damage and put the spare on if necessary.
  • Check the tyres have the required amount of tread (1.6mm min) and do not have bald patches or splits. The outer rim of a 20p coin should be covered when placed in the tread.
  • Make sure the vehicle is not overloaded or full as the tester may need to look around the boot.
  • Check that all fluids are topped up.
